Strong and durable

UV and ozone resistant

Low weight

Manufacturers are trying to bring out various shapes so as to suit the needs of the customers.

Disadvantages

Crack can be formed as a result of ground shifts or during cold climate.

Tough to spot leaks and patching leaks is tough. Patching kits are not fish and plant safe.

Shallow design can lead to maintenance and repairs.

You cannot extend the existing preformed pond.

 Average lifespan of 10 years.

Setting up Preformed ponds

So let us see how we can lay out a preformed pond.

  • Select a suitable spot to set the pond. Select the location which can receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight. Root free area is good. Also, the location should have good drainage.
  • At first, you need to dig a hole for the pond. This should be about 4 inches deeper and wider than the depth and width of the preformed pond you are planning to set up.
  • Now after digging the hole, you need to apply amply 4 inches of plate sand or blow sand to the bottom of the hole and level the sand. This will make sure that the pond basin will project somewhat over the hole. This will help in avoiding rain wash off from entering the pond to a certain point. Keep in mind that the pond basin after being filled with water will sink a little more in the sand due to its weight. So make adjustment accordingly.
  • There should be an equal free room on all sides of the pond. So place the pond basin on the hole so as to achieve the same. The pond should also be level so as to avoid flooding from a side of the pond. So as to level the basin, move a beam with a spirit level on top to and fro over the edge of the pond basin in all directions. This will make the top edge exactly level.
  • Now you need to apply pond substrate or pond soil to the bottom of the preformed pond. Apply in a layer of about 5-6 inches. This is needed for the water plants to grow. Useful bacteria can also be housed on the substrate. Try to use pond substrate itself and never go for alternatives like garden mold or potting soil as they can have more nutrient levels than garden soil which can in turn make the algae flourish in your pond leading to algal bloom.
  • Now add water to the preformed pond gradually. Fill in the gaps between the preformed pond and the excavation with blow sand step by step gradually. You can also mix blow sand and water and pour it in the gap. Make sure that the pond remains level.
  • Now you can put the water plants in the pond.
  • Allow the pond to set. This can take about 7 days. It is important to allow a few days before placing rocks and slabs in the pond, this will allow the ground beneath the pond to settle.

You need to wait further before introducing fishes. The pond will take some time to reach the biological equilibrium. So let the plants and the useful bacteria grow in the pond. Once equilibrium is reached, then only the quality of water will turn out to be good for the survival of fishes. So occasionally check the quality of water in the pond.
